How does a water distiller work?

Tap water is potable. But only after additional cleaning. After all, when you look at the scum in a teapot, it becomes a little scary from the realization of how many impurities enter the body along with untreated water. Yes, it can be passed through filters: in this way, water will get rid of some foreign substances. But if you want to use exactly H2O without impurities, then it makes sense to get a distiller.

What is a water distiller and why is it needed

The most effective way to get rid of extraneous impurities was the sequential conversion of a substance into steam and back into liquid. The distiller is essentially a distillation cube: in one of the tanks, under the influence of high temperatures, the water heats up and evaporates, then the steam passes through the cooling system and distillate appears in the condensate collection tank.

Water prepared in this way is odorless and tasteless, ideal for preparing various dishes or just for drinking in its pure form. It can be safely filled in household appliances with built-in steam generators, because the scum will not damage the heating elements. Such water will not harm the radiator or car washers.

Distiller device

The basic equipment of a simple household distiller includes:

  • distillation cube;
  • cooling system;
  • catchment basin.

But a single distillation is not highly efficient. All foreign impurities remain in the device, and water enters the bowl, which can be safely called clean, but such a system consumes unreasonably much energy. Electric models consume on average 1 kW of electricity to produce 1 liter of distillate.

They are also installed on the territory of distillate-producing enterprises, since they provide for the purification of a large volume of water with minimal energy consumption.

Principle of operation

On this basis, distillers can be divided into two types:

  • steam;
  • electric.

How do both versions of the device work? The first needs a heat source, which can be a gas or electric stove. A steam appliance is capable of producing large volumes of purified water with minimal energy consumption, but due to the bulkiness and complexity of the service, it has not gained much popularity. Among the other disadvantages are:

  1. The need for constant monitoring, because the system does not work in automatic mode.
  2. Low level of protection, which in the absence of skills in handling such devices can lead to burns or equipment failure.

The electric distiller has its own heat source, is compact and does not require any handling skills. Its work is automated: liquid level control sensors turn off the device if necessary. The case of the device prevents accidental burns. Caring for such a technique usually comes down to systematic descaling.

IMPORTANT! When buying an electric distiller, you should pay attention to the presence of protection against overheating and voltage surges. Without it, the device is dangerous.

Of the minuses, a high level of energy consumption and low productivity are highlighted. On average, the device consumes about 1 kW / h, preparing 750-1000 ml of distillate during this time. But for the needs of the family, this is quite enough with the active use of the device, it pays off in about a year.

Performance characteristics

Before buying a water purifier, it is advisable to evaluate your distillate needs. If it is used only for drinking and servicing appliances with steam generators, then a modest distiller with a capacity of 1-2 liters is suitable. In a situation where it is planned to cook on treated water, it is better to opt for a device with a capacity of 4 liters. The acquisition of larger devices for domestic use is unjustified.

If the container for boiling is not made of food stainless steel, then it is better to refuse to purchase the device - it will not only fail to fully purify the water, but will also saturate it with harmful substances.

The case can be made of metal or heat-resistant plastic. The only difference is durability - steel lasts longer. To protect the user from burns, manufacturers supplement the distiller with a plastic handle.

The finished water tank is usually made of stainless steel or glass. The first option is more durable, the second requires a careful attitude. If the device is equipped with a plastic bowl (this significantly reduces its cost), you should make sure that the collection is made of food-grade heat-resistant material. Otherwise, water can acquire an unpleasant aftertaste, indicating that it is saturated with harmful substances.
