DIY heat gun

Often heat guns sold in stores are either too weak, or they consume a lot of energy, or are simply expensive. If you have a small set of spare parts, tools and ingenuity, you can assemble the heater yourself.

What parts will be assembled

Before starting the assembly, you need to clearly understand the principle of operation of the device.

  1. There is a certain heating element.
  2. By means of a fan, air is distributed throughout the room.
  3. The temperature controller helps to set the heating temperature.
  4. The temperature sensor protects the device from overheating.

Therefore, for the manufacture of any heat gun, we need:

  • The body is made of non-combustible material, best of metal
  • Electric fan,
  • Heater (heater, gas burner or divider),
  • Power cable
  • For gas heat guns you need a cylinder and a hose with a valve,
  • Stand or support for the housing,
  • Controllers and temperature sensors.

Instruments

For work, we need:

  • Screwdrivers;
  • Riveter or welding;
  • Soldering iron;
  • Tester;
  • Hands growing from the right place.

If the latter is not about you, then it is better to buy a finished heat gun in the store.

Calculations

Before proceeding with the assembly of the heat gun, you need to decide on several important aspects.

IMPORTANT! remember the fire safety rules, observe safety precautions when working with the welding machine and electric current.

The first thing that needs to be calculated is an indicator of the power of the heat gun, which will be required for heating. On average, 1 kilowatt is enough per 10 square meters. But in different regions and in different conditions, it varies. Here are a few quantities that can serve as a support:

  • In the south of Russia, for a room of 10 meters, where the ceilings are not too high, 0.5-0.8 kilowatts are enough.
  • In the northern regions, 1.2-1.5 kilowatts are needed for the same area.
  • Depending on the material of the walls, cracks and other heat losses, the power of the heat gun must be increased by two or more times.

The second important factor is the state of the wiring. This is especially true for electric heat guns. It is possible that weak wiring can not withstand a powerful heater, knock out plugs or short circuit. In such cases, it is necessary to conduct a separate cable of increased power from the meter to the outlet, where the device will turn on.

Making a heat gun - instructions

Next, we consider several popular models of heat guns and methods of making with their own hands.

Gas heat gun

A gas heat gun is an efficient and economical way to heat large areas. There are 2 main types: Stationary, connected to the gas pipeline and mobile, for which cylinders are used. Builders use mobile options when working in the winter, and are used in greenhouses and garages.

By the method of heating emit:

  • Direct heating devices, when gas from the burner directly enters the fan, and then into the room. The efficiency of such a heat gun is about 100%, although it is not the most beneficial for health.
  • Indirect heating devices. Here the gas is heated by a special heat exchanger, and the combustion products go into the chimney, just like in a gas boiler. The efficiency of such a heat gun is lower, but it can be safely used in residential premises.

To create the simplest heat gun of the first type with your own hands you will need:

  • An old gas or welding cylinder or thick-walled pipe.
  • Fan.
  • Gas nozzle with divider.

The bottom of the balloon is cut off.

A burner and an ignition device are installed inside.

The fan is mounted at the outlet.

The gas hose and electric cable are supplied.

Supports are welded or screwed so that the heat gun does not lie on the floor.

After testing, the device is ready to work.

Electric heat gun

The design of the electric gun is not much different from the gas one, only instead of the burner they install heating elements.

Key aspects of the assembly:

  1. The length of the pipe for the housing is taken from the calculation of the length of the heaters and the distance of at least 20 cm between them and the fan.
  2. The wiring of the heating elements and the fan must be autonomous, with mandatory grounding.
  3. A temperature controller is required to increase / decrease the heating.
  4. Ideally, protection against overheating is needed.

When assembling and operating an electric heat gun, it is important to comply with safety rules when working with electric current.

Heat gun on diesel fuel and diesel fuel

This is the most dangerous type of heat guns, so the assembly requires increased accuracy and care.

The body will require a sealed tank, which will be divided into a heat exchanger and a combustion chamber. The ideal option would be an old wood boiler or stove stove.

Using the pipe, the burning diesel fuel comes from the burner into the chamber, passes through the heat exchanger. Combustion products are removed to the hood.

The fan pumps cold air into the housing, creating a stream of heated air from the nozzle.

Wood heat gun

A wood heat gun is similar to a DT gun, but it is somewhat safer and stinks significantly less. In the combustion chamber, instead of the nozzle and burner, a door for firewood, a blower and grates is installed. A wood cannon is heated like a wood-burning boiler, the only difference is the presence of a fan.

Important details, safety rules

Homemade electric guns are much more dangerous than factory ones, because in the process of their assembly it is not always possible to take into account all the nuances. The basic safety rules for heating with such devices are:

  1. Never leave a working device unattended, even if it is equipped with residual current circuit breakers and seems completely safe.
  2. Do not leave diesel or gas heat guns turned on for the night in a residential building, do not risk the lives of people and the safety of property.
  3. For heat guns on wood, diesel fuel or gas, be sure to equip a good hood and carefully monitor its serviceability, clean it from soot and combustion products in a timely manner.
  4. Fuel tanks and gas cylinders should not be in close proximity to a working gun, in order to avoid fire.
  5. An open flame should be covered by a protective screen so that the embers or splashes of the burning diesel fuel do not enter the room.
