What is a thermal curtain

In order to protect against the penetration of cold air masses into the premises, systems have been developed, called thermal curtains. Installed in window and door openings, the most vulnerable places of rooms of any type of device, they create a directed, evenly distributed over the area of the openings, stream of warm (heated) air. The created air barrier prevents the penetration of cold air masses and at the same time prevents the exit of warm air outside.

What is a thermal curtain

The design of the devices may vary, but the principle of operation for all models is the same. Air is pumped by the fan and, passing through a set of heating elements, is sent to a distribution system made in the form of a large number of nozzles or in the form of blinds, which regulates the direction and intensity of the air flow. Both nozzles and shutters are designed for the direction of air flow at an optimal angle (up to 40 degrees).

To create a uniform air flow, a special type of radial fan (turbine) is used. It is located inside the body along its entire length. The maximum length is 800 mm. Therefore, when arranging wide openings, several engines are used, each of which corresponds to a separate turbine, or one engine of increased power, providing torque to two turbines located on opposite sides of it. The rotation speed, the regulation of the flow cross sections of the intake and distribution holes, the heating temperature, the operating mode can be set manually or in automatic mode. Most modern designs have electronic control systems.

As heating elements, standard electric heating elements are most often used. Depending on the power, they are able to heat intensively heat the passing air flow to create a dense curtain. The disadvantage of such heating elements is the high energy consumption. Infrared heating elements are used mainly in large shopping centers, at industrial facilities. They also gain distribution during the installation of equipment in individual buildings. The high cost of such elements is a rather expensive item of expenditure for use on small objects (workshops, shops).

Another type of heating element, a heat exchanger with circulating hot water, has lower heating efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of such equipment is lower when compared with electric and infrared elements. But having constant access to the central water supply system or to individual boiler rooms, the costs of using thermal curtains with a water heat exchanger will be significantly lower.

REFERENCE! All modern systems of thermal curtains are able to function in the ventilation and air conditioning mode, being one of the variants of climatic equipment for industrial and domestic purposes.

Types of thermal curtains

There are three main varieties of thermal curtains:

  • horizontal
  • vertical
  • recessed.

Horizontal

This design is installed above the window and doorways. The flow of warm air is directed from top to bottom. Differ in reliability and practicality. The positive qualities include high performance and even distribution of warm air flow.

Vertical

Such a design involves the installation of the distribution system of the duct in an upright position, on the side of a window or doorway. Such a system is optimal in the presence of narrow and high windows and doors. In this case, the warm air masses do not deviate in the opening area and provide reliable cut-off of cold air from the outside.

Recessed

Such a system is most often used in rooms where installation or suspension of suspended or stretched ceilings is initially available. In principle, such a thermal curtain does not so much play the role of an obstacle to the penetration of cold air, but acts as a climatic equipment. Continuous supply of warm air flow provides comfortable climatic conditions inside the room and reliably eliminates possible drafts.

Scope of thermal curtains

Modern thermal curtains are used in places where warm air is consumed quite intensively, for example, doors often open and close, or there is a need to keep them constantly open.

REFERENCE! In many retail outlets, one can observe constantly open doors. According to marketers, in stores where the entrance is open, sales are increasing. The statement is controversial, but the use of thermal curtains in this situation is practically the only way to maintain an acceptable temperature regime indoors.

Industrial workshops, warehouses, public buildings, metro. In any of these objects, the use of thermal curtain systems only increases the overall level of comfort of being inside. Small trading pavilions and even separate trading tents are equipped with thermal curtains.

Gained distribution of these systems in everyday life. Equipped with a system of protection against the penetration of cold air, the garage allows you to stay inside it for a long time even with the doors open. Cottages, where there is a similar type of equipment, have the additional possibility of a comfortable stay and pastime.

Properly selected according to technical characteristics and mounted in accordance with the necessary requirements and recommendations, the thermal curtain system will be a reliable additional protection against the cold.
